School of Foreign Studies—— From here to the world, to the future

The School of Foreign Studies, University of International Business and Economics, consist of twelve departments: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Persian, and Greek. Established in the early 1950s, most majors have the longest history among similar universities in China. With the gradual implementation of the "the Belt and Road" national development strategy, the cultivation of high-level foreign language talents, especially the "economy and trade plus foreign language" compound talents, has become a certain necessity. Along 70 years of exploration and practice, School of Foreign Studies established a complete and systematic mechanism of international and compound elites nurturing, which has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for the country and society.


Student population

There are currently 1148 students  studying in School of Foreign Studies, including 866 undergraduates, 263 master postgraduates, and 19 doctoral students.


Talent cultivation features

In 2007, non-common language group (including Korean, Vietnamese, Italian, Portuguese, Persian, Greek), Arabic Language major, and Spanish Language major were approved as nationallevel  signature discipline. In 2009, one of the student internship bases, the China Import and Export Commodity Fair, was approved as an off-campus talent training base in Beijing. In 2010, Japanese language major was approved as national-level signature discipline. Since 2012, the School of Foreign Studies has established a second level doctoral program in "Business Foreign Languages" under the discipline of Applied Economics, achieving interdisciplinary integration and cultivating a group of composite high-end talents in the fields of business foreign languages and cross-cultural business communication. In 2017, the discipline of foreign languages and literature was rated “A-" in the fourth round of discipline evaluation, ranking in the top 10% in China. In 2018, the school was approved as a doctoral degree authorization point for the first level discipline of foreign language and literature. In 2019, the school was approved as a postdoctoral research mobile station for the first level discipline of foreign language and literature. In 2022, the Arabic-Korean-Vietnamese-Persian Party Branch of the school was approved as a national model branch cultivation and creation unit. From 2019 to 2021, six majors including Arabic, German, Japanese, Spanish, Russian, and Italian were granted national first-class undergraduate major construction sites; three majors, including Korean, French, and Vietnamese, were granted Beijing first-class undergraduate major construction sites, achieving a high-level development pattern where all 12 majors in the school are national level characteristic majors, national or Beijing first-class undergraduate major construction sites.


Faculty

School of Foreign Studies has a strong teaching and research team with 83 teachers, including 14 professors, 36 associate professors, and 16 foreign experts. The doctoral rate of teachers has increased from 42.1% in 2011 to 77.2%, ranking among the top in China. Except for the newly established majors, all 10 majors in our institute are directors or executive director units of the National Teaching and Research Association and the Literature Research Association in their respective languages. Professors in each major hold positions such as directors, executive directors, secretary-general, vice president, and president of relevant academic groups.

In recent years, faculties have been selected as members of the sub-committee of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Foreign Languages and Literature Majors in Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education (including 2 vice chairmen) for six times. Many have been awarded titles such as Beijing Teacher Ethics Model, Capital Labor Medal, and Beijing Excellent Counselor.


Academic research

Our university has established academic communication relationships with over a hundred foreign universities and institutions, among which more than 40 built cooperative relationships with various majors of our school. Teachers often go abroad to give lectures and participate in international academic seminars. More than 90% of teachers have studied or worked abroad, of which more than 80% have studied or pursued further education abroad. In addition, our school maintains friendly cooperation with the embassies of relevant countries in China. In 2017, in order to serve the national strategy and the overall diplomatic situation, and comprehensively promote the construction of the "the Belt and Road", the University of International Business and Economics Regional Institute of Country Studies came into being with 14 research centers, 12 of which are located in the School of Foreign Studies, committed to combining talent training, academic research and national development, promoting discipline development, and building high-end think tanks.


Employments

Over the past 70 years, the School of Foreign Studies sent out thousands of talents in foreign languages, diplomacy, and foreign trade for the country. Students have won numerous awards in domestic and international subject competitions. Statistics show that the employment rate of various majors in our school reached nearly 100% in recent years, with certain majors in short supply. Main employment directionsinclude a)State organs and institutions, such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Central United Department, Ministry of Security, Ministry of Culture, Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, International Broadcasting Station, etc; b)Famous companies and enterprises, such as import and export companies, international economic cooperation companies, foreign enterprises, major banks, etc; and c) Higher education institutes, to become teachers or graduate students  at home or abroad.


International Communication

Our school sends over a hundred undergraduate and postgraduate students to study abroad every year through the National Scholarship Council and inter-school exchange programs. Destination countries include Japan, South Korea, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Brazil, Portugal, Vietnam, Germany, Egypt, Greece, and Iran. More than half graduates of undergraduate programmes every year has experience studying, interning, or visiting abroad.
